Preface: Welcome to one of my Short City Adventures. These are shorter not due to any lack of affection for the featured locations, but because the visits were either brief, offering just a glimpse of the city, or because the cities only have a handful of attractions. Join me and discover whether these cities might interest you.
Köln (Cologne) is renowned for its Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) and its significance along the Rhein River. It’s also one of Germany’s most diverse cities and a hub for LGBTQ+ activities. Notably, Köln is the heart of the Karneval celebrations each spring, drawing people from all over Germany.
My visit to Köln was on a unique and brief occasion, leaving me little time to fully experience the city. One delightful observation was the locals enjoying their time on the steps beside the Kölner Dom, a stark contrast to the cafe culture in Paris. On the same side of the Rhein, near the Groß St. Martin Church, stands a row of charming, colorful houses – a picturesque hallmark of Köln. This area, known as the fish market, is also packed with restaurants and cafes, adding to the city’s vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
Despite the brevity of my visit, Köln captivated me with its lively atmosphere and picturesque charm. It’s a city that beckons for a longer stay to fully embrace its unique blend of culture and history.
