The year 2024 presented a particularly challenging task for awarding restaurants, as we encountered numerous fantastic establishments across 7 different countries. This luxurious problem led us to select 4 outstanding restaurants for the year.

Since we’ve never specified our standards before, I’d like to establish our criteria: We typically award restaurants where we’ve dined at least twice to ensure consistent quality. We vote for establishments that create generally delicious food while adding complexity to flavors, for example, does the chef incorporate innovative ingredients to enhance the original dish? Cost-quality efficiency also factors into our decisions alongside taste. While presentation and delicacy aren’t primary considerations (meaning Michelin restaurants may not always be competitive), extremely poor presentation could lower a restaurant’s score.

Enough introduction, let’s explore the winning restaurants of 2024!

The Golden Cat 2024 goes to Kracherlemoos Seefeld! During our travels in Seefeld, Austria, we found ourselves returning to this restaurant repeatedly for dinner. Their menu is reasonably focused, they specialize in a handful of substantial Tirol regional dishes covering both water and land proteins, providing excellent variety without overwhelming options.

While my husband sampled various appetizers including beef tartare and salmon, I was consistently drawn to their chestnut soup. This soup offers more than warmth on cold winter evenings; the addition of herbs and mushrooms creates a rich, earthy flavor profile.

I enjoyed their deer ragu twice and duck twice. The ragu was tender, but beyond the traditional recipe, they enhanced it with fried bacon for additional flavor, garnished beautifully with pea shoots and stick bread. While the duck was above average, my preference still leans toward French preparations.

As my husband noted: “Excellent cuisine that combines traditional dishes with modern creativity. Perfectly prepared, beautifully presented, and consistently delicious.” This restaurant clearly outweighed all others to earn the Golden Cat of 2024!

The Silver Cat is awarded to NR in New York. NR specializes in Japanese cuisine, particularly ramen, alongside well-crafted cocktails. Their fried chicken appetizer with matcha powder immediately sets them apart – cleverly using green tea to balance the rich, oily texture.

Most of their ramen offerings are brothless, but the perfect amount of fat makes the noodles incredibly smooth without being excessive. The flavor complexity elevates these noodles to another level entirely. If our first visit made us eager to return, the second visit not only confirmed this as the best ramen we’ve experienced but proved it unbeatable across all categories.

When my friend ordered their most affordable ramen, appearing similar to traditional soup ramen available elsewhere, I had modest expectations until I tasted it. The fish-based broth intensified every ingredient and simply surpassed all other ramen we’ve tried.

Finally, Le Coupe Gorge receives the Bronze Cat, a French restaurant offering both traditional and innovative modern dishes. As my husband observed: “It was unpretentious but absolutely delicious. Le Coupe Gorge offers food that makes you feel like you’re in a countryside French restaurant in the heart of Paris. The chef genuinely cares about your experience and happily answers questions about preparation.”

Indeed, Chef Julien Stefanizzi personally visited our table, and we enjoyed an extended, delightful conversation about food. Another remarkable aspect is how their dishes consistently improve and evolve – comparing our 2022 visit to now, the same dishes have become more intricate and even more delicious!

Special Mentions:

Moontree Sushi And Tapas didn’t receive an award this time, not due to quality concerns, but because we haven’t had sufficient return visits to fully evaluate consistency. Whether the ashitaka tofu or various sushi rolls, everything was fresh and delicious. I sincerely hope we’ll visit Seattle again soon so this establishment can compete for an award!

Another noteworthy mention is Restaurant Meteora, a family-style Greek restaurant. Though permanently closed, it served its close community for several decades, becoming a cherished memory for generations, including myself. I’ll never forget the garlic and herbal spicy flavors on perfectly grilled meat, the half-melted cheese on broad beans with tomato sauce, and Efti’s warm, polite smiles!

As awarding so many excellent restaurants becomes increasingly challenging, I’m seriously considering categorizing awards starting next year so these gems won’t remain hidden.
