Bayern (Bavaria) is a state of lakes, thanks to its geographical proximity to the Alps. Tegernsee is one of them very close to the mountains. Nestled next to the Alps, the lake is surrounded by several towns, making it a popular destination. It was one of the places my husband and I planned to go for sauna relaxation but didn’t make it. However, I went there later alone, seeking a connection with nature.
Best time to visit: All Year Round
Getting there is easy, especially from München (Munich), BRB RB 57 is the Regional Bahn that reaches there. It’s wise to always check the latest travel information on Deutsche Bahn’s website, and also on the train itself. I once boarded a train with conflicting numbers and nearly ended up at the wrong destination!
My mission was to see the lake so upon arrival, I made my way through parts of the town of Tegernsee. Similar to other Bavarian towns like Bad Tölz, Garmisch, and Oberammergau, Tegernsee features low houses with biblical paintings due to Catholic influence. Unique to Tegernsee is its hilly landscape with streams winding to the lake, creating a picturesque setting similar to the Chinese poetic phrase “小桥流水人家.” There were also at least two gold smiths I passed by within five minutes. During my walk, I noticed several goldsmiths and numerous spa and sauna facilities along the lake’s edge, popular for their combined views and relaxation offerings.
Lake Tegernsee is truly a lake, unlike the sea-like Starnberger See and Chiemsee. A striking feature of Bavarian lakes, including Tegernsee, is their clarity. The lake is ideal for various activities, whether alone or with family. Notably, there are free and clean public toilets by the lake, a thoughtful and rare arrangement.
A path stretching from Tegernsee to Gmund am Tegernsee caught my attention, promising more scenic views. The approximately 1.5-hour walk was a journey through captivating landscapes, making me forget any sense of fatigue. The charming villages including the hillsides added to the picturesque panorama.
Near Gmund Bahnhof (train station), a hidden trail led me to the lake’s northern edge, offering an excellent spot for photographing the lake against the Alpine backdrop. In winter, the empty wooden piers, typically occupied by yachts, transformed into serene viewpoints. I took a moment there, sitting at a pier’s end, to fully absorb the peacefulness and beauty of Tegernsee’s natural landscape.
Tegernsee is a serene lake town with breathtaking Alpine views. Between the charming houses, glittering lake, and surrounding mountains, it’s easy to lose yourself in the natural beauty. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway in Bavaria where you can reconnect with nature, Tegernsee is a perfect choice.
