Rheingau, located on the northern side of the Rhein River, is a designated wine region in the state of Hessen, Germany. Its proximity to one of Europe’s major rivers and its position on the lee side of the mountains make it an ideal location for grape cultivation. Grapes in this area benefit from ample sunlight from the south and experience downslope airflow, resulting in less rainfall and drought conditions. Rheingau was the first place where I lived long-term outside my native culture and country, and its picturesque countryside brought me lasting happiness.
Best time to visit: Late Spring and Summer 🌿
Before choosing schools and universities for exchange programs, I read about EBS Business School in Oestrich-Winkel, located in Rheingau. My intuition told me that I would fall in love with the town, and destiny did indeed lead me there. I arrived in the evening, and my first impression was that Oestrich-Winkel was a quiet town – in fact, any noise is not allowed from 8 pm to 8 am. However, during daylight, I discovered that the town and its neighboring areas are built alongside sprawling vineyards that seem to stretch endlessly.
There are also many wineries in town. Because the region is quite famous, the owners of these wineries are not just German. In fact, Italian and French owners have come to cultivate wonderful grapes for excellent Riesling wine. Although I’m not a big fan of Riesling, my love for the region compels me to choose it whenever I’m in Rheingau.
I visited Rheingau three years after leaving, and the unchanged landscape immediately transported me back to the wonderful times I had there. Two activities stood out during my time living there, and I revisited them in 2022. Walking along the riverbank was the best way for me to relax and alleviate my anxiety. The flowing water, the trees, and the geese and ducks enjoying their time all contributed to a soothing experience. The second activity was simply losing myself in the vineyards.
I passed through Rüdesheim am Rhein in 2019 and found the town interesting. Upon revisiting, I noticed its popularity, likely due to the high density of wineries. The town offers various activities other than visiting vineyards and wineries.
What I love most about this place is that it fulfilled my dream of living in a countryside adorned with hills and rivers. The culture of wine was an added bonus that helped me connect even more deeply with the area.
