In this blog post, I will take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of my journey in constructing my personal website – a blend of a blog and portfolio. From the initial inspiration that fueled this project to the technical aspects of utilizing WordPress and various plugins, I will cover each in detail. Additionally, I will discuss the strategies I have employed, as well as those I plan to employ, for optimizing my website’s search engine ranking.

From Academic Exposure to Real-World Application

Journey to a Personal Website: From Inspiration to Search Engine Optimisation (1) 1The origin of my interest in website development can be traced back to my time at SKEMA Business School in France, where I took a Digital Marketing course, but it was more like a website development course. Initially, we learned HTML5 tools and coding to create websites, but due to various reasons, I lacked motivation to build my own site at the time. A year later, during my Luxury Marketing specialization, under the guidance of Professor Nealon from NCSU Poole Management, we were taught advanced website-building techniques and were directed to conduct website audits. This experience provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the essential elements for creating a high-quality website.

This year has been particularly unusual for me due to relocation and the ongoing process of my residency and work status in the US. During this period of waiting, I engaged in online courses in digital marketing and began writing on diverse topics. Over time, this combination of learning and writing accumulated into substantial material, providing me with the necessary resources to finally build my website.

Networking with an alumna from the same academic program inspired me to use my site to showcase my skills and qualifications for prospective employers. Of course, my purpose was not solely professional, as some utilize their sites as portfolios. I also wanted the site to be enjoyable, otherwise I would lack motivation to work on it daily. I decided it should be a blend of marketing insights and personal interests – you never know when an interest could become a career.

I hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into the early stages of my journey in building a personal website. Next time, I will take you through the maze of website building, from choosing hosting plans to navigating the complexities of WordPress and plugins. We will explore the technical challenges and lessons learned that have influenced the development of my website. See you in the next post!
